Part 37/365: An atheist reviews a popular Christian devotional from Jesus Daily.
(If you are new to this page, here’s a little background.)

Dear Karen,
Are you having a SuperBowl party today? Are you planning on boycotting a beer company for having the audacity to film a television ad about the American Dream months before our president signed an executive order to temporarily ban legal immigrants and vulnerable refugees from entering our country? Or, are you more… logical? This question has nothing to do with today’s devotional, I was just wondering your thoughts on whether a nation of immigrants built by immigrants should boycott a company for making an ad about the history of its own immigrant founder. On with our regularly scheduled review for Jesus Daily:

VERSE OF THE DAY: Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.'”Psalm 141:3

Apparently King David has Tourette’s Syndrome and is unable to control his own speech?  Interestingly, in the next verse David pleads, “Do not incline my heart to any evil thing, to practice deeds of wickedness.” Hmm… why would a believer ever think that God would use them to do evil? (Maybe because there is a Bible full of such immoral idiocy.)

Today’s Themes:

I *almost* agreed with today’s devotional – check yourself before you wreck yourself. The author does a good job of showing how our words can hurt others, especially those we love. However, rather than taking personal responsibility by showing restraint, the author tells readers that it’s up to God to hold their tongue from causing harm:

“Did you know that God can help you control what you say? If you ask him to help you, you will be surprised by its effect on your speech. You will not be able to speak without finding the right words first? You may just become unusually quiet.”

Uh… what? I mean, I guess…. no, wait – what? I’ll admit – even after many years in ministry, I’m not sure what the author is getting at with this word salad.

Short Secular Alternative Devotional:

Just don’t be a jerk – think before you speak. See? That was easy! No god(s) or muzzles necessary.

See you tomorrow for “In Your Weakness”?
– Horus Gilgamesh

P.S. Yep, I’m finally getting around to putting up a little tip jar.
If you’re a fan of this little project, be sure to check out everything else
I’ve got going on. (Spoiler Alert: I could use your help.)
